The Historic Manor of Shipden

You'll find on page 77 of A Dictionary of Cromer and Overstrand History a suggested map of Cromer Manors at the time of the Domesday book, 1086. The map is based on work undertaken by Richard Harbord, who calculated the land area indicated by the Domesday record and drew some conclusions from the current road routes and the known site of Shipden church.

It can only be speculation, since no-one knows what the Domesday measurement of a 'carucate' actually was and it may well have varied from parish to parish. However, the map serves a useful purpose, and some of the geographical features from one thousand years ago are carried through to the present day.
